Comments were deleted because of profanity, irrelevance, CAPS LOCK, or other factors that distracted from the main point of the articles and were not constructive to any kind of argument or debate. People use the internet to spread sheer belligerence and throw nasty slurs at people behind a screen name or anonymous message. The New York Times has a Student Opinion page available for students to read articles and leave -appropriate- comments. Here is a link to my contribution. Going to the right college affects your life forever. Nearly everyone dreams of going to their perfect school, getting their degree, and having a successful and prosperous career. Some people want to get as far away from home as possible and go to school abroad or across the country, and then there are those, like me, who would rather stay local and close to home. My dream school is Georgia State University and I aspire to study sociology and market research. GSU is my dream college for many reasons. I love Atlanta; I used to live right in the heart of Midtown. GSU was walking distance from my house and I love and miss the area so much. I like that it is a liberal, forward thinking school, and I think part of the reason for that is it's location in the city. Sports are not the epicenter of the school's reputation which I admire. I want to study sociology and market research because I want to work in advertising and consumer sciences for a major corporation such as Nike or Coca-Cola. To be honest, any kind of marketing/consumer related job would be fine with me, but to work at one of those two would be my absolute dream job. What is a "digital footprint"? Your digital footprint is the impression you leave on the web. Comments, pictures, and anything else you may post, tweet, instagram, or vine is part of your digital footprint. For some people, you can just Google their name and you can find virtually anything about them. That's the danger of the web, you have to make sure everything is on private or said in private, or virtually anyone can find out virtually anything about you (that you put out there, of course.) Upon Googling my first and last names, nothing related to me shows up. This is because I keep all my social networks on private or only use my first name, so that people cannot find me so easily online. Only when I include my middle name could I find something actually about me. When I Google myself using my middle name, the only page that shows up related to me is my SoundCloud (which I have never actually posted anything on) account. When my future colleagues, employers, and collage professors talk about me, I want them to speak highly of me. In the WordCloud below are some words I would use to describe myself and that I hope others use to describe me. In the articles we read, they all had a common theme. What you post may have a huge affect on whether or not you get hired, get into the school you want, or being able to play on a sports team. Although according to the article less than half of employers and hiring managers use social networks to screen their applicants, no tweet or picture is worth losing an opportunity like a job or an education over. I chose the Republican Party to write a satire on because I truly feel like they are detrimental to the country and are holding us at a standstill (aka, gridlock). I believe same-sex marriage is perfectly normal and to try to justify reasons why it isn’t is purely asenine. My satirical argument was that some of the people that run our countries are so openly biased and ignorant and intolerant. This paper is for someone like me, which could be described as a “flaming liberal.” The definition of satire is “a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision,or ridicule.” So as you can tell, I was being satirical but also using a darker form of slapstick comedy when I was referring to Saxby Chambliss overdosing on tolerance. I used other literary devices, such as hyperbole, when I was talking about the 14 year old boy who said he would rather be dead than be gay. The last device I used was a euphemism, by calling politicians “intolerant,” when there are more literal terms I could use, such as racist, sexist, or ignorant. |
